Wanderers But Not Lost

About us

We are a portuguese couple and we have been travelling together since we met. Carla is a geographer and does glacier research in Argentina. Rui is physicist and works as a teacher in Portugal. The last ten years, we have traveled together, backpacking the four corners of the world. Our trips began with one interrail in Europe and since then, we have covered the different continents and visited over 70 countries. Our highlights are India, Argentina, Iran, Greenland or Mexico, as places that we always dream to come back.

SAM_0503-300x225Carla Alexandra Fernandes Mota, born on May 8, 1975 in São João da Madeira, currently lives in Guimarães. She has a degree in Geography from the University of Coimbra and a PhD in Physical Geography and Environmental Studies at the same university. She is currently Professor of Geography in Guimarães, in Portugal. She does Glacial Geomorphology research, at the University of Coimbra, about glaciers and glacial landscapes of the Andes, in Argentina, with the cooperation of the National University of Cuyo, Mendoza.

“I am a tirelessly curious portuguese world wanderer and also a travel photographer. My main passion lies in capturing disappearing ancient cultures, human condition and amazing nature wonders,  challenging situations. My passion for travel photography has taken me to more than 60 countries which has helped me to create a vast collection of images of people and places from around the world. My range of subjects is fairly broad, but whether I am photographing nomadic shepherds in Mongolia, life in the last traditional villages of South America or prayers in a muslim mosque in Iran, my common aim is always the same – to capture the human element and his legacy. Travelling as a glacial geomorphologist during my research in Argentina, combined with a strong interest in nature and travels, soon led me into the field of nature photography, which has been my passion ever since. I freelance and shoot documentary photo stories. Much of my travel/documentary photography is in the private collections of photo lovers.”
